Hospitality at Rensselaer Sustainability Initiatives

Hospitality at Rensselaer Sustainability Initiatives

Education is the primary focus of our business, and we are committed to fostering and promoting sustainable business principles to the Rensselaer community. We lead by example through activities that minimize our impact on the environment and our programs include the necessary information to encourage informed choices on what we consume and how we interact with the natural environment.

Here is a list of just some of the things we do everyday!

•             Zero Trans Fats

•             Cage Free Shell Eggs

•             rBGH Free (Artificial Growth Hormones) Milk

•             Fair Trade and Organic Coffee Options

•             Sustainable Seafood Program

•             Eat Local Program, purchasing local products when possible

•             Waste Reduction Programs including Trayless Dining halls and a Waste Toolkit for our kitchen staff

•             Customer and Associate Nutrition, Health and Wellness Programs and Training like MINDFUL, our offer to make healthy choices second nature

Vegawatt: Clean Energy from Recycled Oil

In 2012, a device called "Vegawatt" was installed at the Commons Dining Hal. This innovative technology takes used cooking oil and converts it, on-site, to clean energy for the dining hall.

This recycling system has many benefits to our campus as well as the environment;
  • Produce free hot water on site
  • Produce free electricity on site
  • Save on waste vegetable oil disposal fees
  • Reduce electric demand charges
  • Reduce the CO2 emissions of food operations
  • Save hundreds of dollars every month on utility bills
  • Reduce the dependence on fossil fuels

Customer Satisfaction Survey

We ask Students, Faculty and Staff at RPI to answer an Internet survey about our products and services. For every survey answered, Sodexo at RPI donates $1 to help feed the hungry. The total amount donated for 2009/2010 was $1,800, which was shared by two food pantries in Troy NY, Jospeh's House and Shelter and Unity House.

Gingerbread House Holiday Competition

Students participated in a gingerbread house building competition just prior to the Holidays. Students built and displayed their completed houses in our Commons Dining Hall to be judged by their peers, one penny per vote. The proceeds, which were donated to Make-A-Wish Foundation, totaled $466.

Terra Cafe

The Terra Café is a special once a week café aimed to give students a  unique lunch experience. The focus of the Terra Café is serving meals made entirely of local and organic ingredients. The aim is to expose students to foods that are healthy, and that are also beneficial to the environment and local economies. The café is catered by Hospitality Services, and served by members of the Terra Café Club. You can support this programming by visiting us at Russell Sage Banquet Room ever Wednesday from 11:30AM to 1:30PM. We accept Cash, M/C, Visa, AMEX, Flex Dollars and RAD.

Helping Hands

A program Sodexo participates in before the holidays to collect food and raise money for local food pantries. This past year we collected over 600 pounds of food that was donated to the Unity Food Pantry on 8th St. in Troy.

Sodexo's ethical coffee and tea brand. Our fundamental objective is simple, we want to deliver great quality coffee and excellent tea to our consumers. What makes us different from the competition is that we support our objective with our four founding principles: FREEDOM, CARE, RESPECT, & SUPPORT.

Available in all resident dining halls accross campus.
